Top of New York wedding photoshoot

When I got to know that I will be shooting a wedding in New York City, [destination wedding photographer dream-come-true], one of the first ideas that popped in my mind was "We have to do a photoshoot at Top of the Rock". First time I went to the city a year ago, I seemed to go everywhere else but this place. Something I deeply regretted given the countless number of jaw-dropping photos I've seen from the observatory. Now was the perfect moment to change that - and to do a wedding photoshoot at this epic scenery would be the cherry on top.

Now of course as a wedding photographer, my first concern is always what the clients want for their big day. I knew already they had some locations in mind and I also knew that it wouldn't be a good idea to try visiting this place at the wedding day as such a move could easily take a few hours from the day. So what I did was offer them a complementary after-wedding photo shoot when we could visit Top of the Rock observatory at sunset for some stunning wedding shots. And they said yes! Now let me add here, that this is one of the positive sides of hiring a destination wedding photographer that might even fly from another continent to photograph your wedding - a destination wedding photographer will actually be excited to shoot at the place where you live. You see, however beautiful a place is, there are only so many times you can get hyped up about it. If someone is photographing at the same place, same city, year after year, the excitement eventually wears out and knowing you already have thousands of pretty photos there doesn't really push you out of your way to get the perfect photo. A destination wedding photographer views every opportunity as a once-in-a-lifetime event because he/she never knows if they will ever visit the same place again. At least I know I certainly do. Now I have to say, doing a wedding photoshoot at Top of The Rock was not what I anticipated at all. As a conclusion to this post I would like to share with you my favorite photo from the day and the caption I wrote for it on Instagram soon after that. One of my more eloquent moments I feel and being real with you for the experience.

"I cannot tell you how insecure I felt in this very moment. It was one of those 'Expectations vs. Reality' experiences where I've been thinking for a long time what a perfect spot for a photoshoot 'Top of the Rock' would be seeing all these gorgeous pictures. And then going to the other side of the world only to find out that one can barely get a spot to even see the sunset, and how much more to actually do a wedding photoshoot there. But you know what? Now I don't care. I don't care about the hundreds of tourists in most of the photos that even Photoshop can't remove. Because thinking about it, this is an accurate representation of what love is. It's not perfect. It's not what you want it to be. It's not what you imagined it would be. It is what it is. There will be other people trying to get in the picture. It might not work out the first time. You would have to try again, and again, and again. And be patient. And who knows, maybe, just maybe, it could turn into something beautiful. Not perfect, but beautiful."
